Workshops
Each year, the Melbourne Chamber Music Society offers educational outreach WORKSHOPS for Brevard music students, with groups appearing in our International Concert Series.
It is impressive to witness the improvement obtained in so short a time during one of these educational outreach workshops. The young people have always expressed great enthusiasm for the expert coaching they received.
The Melbourne Chamber Music Society is proud to sponsor these events in our local community.

Spanish Brass
Stone Middle School, Melbourne
The Spanish Brass opened the clinic to approximately 70 students with a presentation of a medley of the “Concierto de Aranjuez” by Rodrigo and the jazz tune “Spain” by American composer Chick Corea. About half of the students were musicians with the remainder being members of the school’s Spanish Club. A question regarding the musical term “fugue” drew mostly blank stares from the students so the Spanish Brass demonstrated in a unique fashion. The group’s members formed a straight line and from memory began playing the Bach “Fugue in G Minor”. Each time a player had the main theme they took a step or to forward and retreated when another player took over the theme.
From the fugue lesson the group moved to introducing the students to different Latin/Spanish dance forms. Several eager students volunteered to dance until they learned they would have to dance with an actual partner! The group played a Bossa Nova and a more formal Spanish dance as the students displayed their “moves”

Borealis Wind Quintet -
Satellite High School
About 100 students from Satellite High were treated to a special master-class by the Borealis Wind Quintet. The group played "Indialantic Impromptu" for the students. This piece is a new composition which was premiered the previous night. The students had the opportunity to get pointers from the Borealis whose accolades include a 2006 Grammy nomination for their CD "A La Carte" in the "Best Classical Chamber Music Performance Category". Oboist Tamara Beach Wells shared with the students that her son was a member of a fairly successful rock band as well as being a classically trained trumpet player. She encouraged students to listen to all genres of music adding that there are really only two types of music, good and bad. She challenged students to be open minded when listening to new music but to understand that there is bad classical music and good hip-hop!
